6th World Goju-Ryu Karate Championships in Foligno, Italy
Our time in Italy was hugely successful and rewarding. We had nine students competing in these world championships and brought home three medals as well as a special appreciation award. We could not be prouder of our students and their achievements. Thank you to all of them for representing our Dojo so skillfully and diligently.
The following students competed in the tournament:
- Aiden “Viper” Fortuin competed in Individual Kumite Mini Cadets, 12-13 years old, under 38kg and Kata Mini Cadets, aged 12 to 13 years divisions
- Brogan “Teflon” Reis competed in Individual Kumite Juniors, 16-17 years, under 76kg division
- Du-Wayne “Iceman” Mouton in Individual Kumite Cadets, 14-15 years, under 52kg & Kata Cadets, 14-15 years divisions
- Luané “Dynamite” Wilsch competed in Individual Kumite Mini Cadets, 12-13 years, under 42kg, Kata Mini Cadets, 12-13 years & Team Kumite Mini Cadets, 12-13 years divisions
- Nicole Ayres “Flyer” Ayres competed in Individual Kumite Mini Cadets, 12-13 years, under 48kg, Kata Mini Cadets, 12-13 years & Team Kumite Mini Cadets, 12-13 years divisions
- Sensei Nicolette Morrison-Hagen competed in Individual Kumite Masters & Kata Masters divisions
- Ruan “Underdog” Pogieter competed in Individual Kumite Mini Cadets, 12-13 years, 50+Kg division
- Tylo “ Razor” Majiet competed in Individual Kumite Cadets, 14-15 years, under 57kg division
These are the Medals our Students Won:
- Sensei Nicolette Morrison-Hagen won Gold for Individual Kumite Female Master division
- Nicole Ayres won Two Bronze for Individual Kumite Mini Cadets, 12-13 years division & Team Kumite Mini
- Cadets, 12-13 years division
Luané Wilsch won Bronze for Team Kumite Mini Cadets, 12-13 years division
Sensei Monique Morrison-Hagen received an appreciation award from the WGKF executive for her contribution as Continental Chief Referee and as a World Goju Ryu Federation Referee Committee member.
The standard of competition was exceptionally high and South Africa placed 4th in the World Goju-Ryu Karate Championships overall. This is a testament to the quality and level of training in SA.
